CG Society

CG Society (CGS) gives me a headache. Something to do with the layout and catacomb-like arrangement of the site. Hehe, perhaps it's not that bad, but it is really confusing the first time you roll up. The front page is a huge mix of text and flashing graphics. The section title are small while the content of the sections are loud and stand out so it's hard to tell what's an ad and what's the actual site content. However, CGS is one of the hugest and most popular online art communities. The thing is, it's purely for digital art. It's categories are 3D and 2D (with animation on the way).

This site is really directed more towards professionals, even more so than GFXArtist. The ads that it has are mainly for graphics software and educational courses. This site is really great if you want to read some interesting articles about the latest and greatest creations in the digital world of graphics. The artists and community seems to come in second behind the news and articles. If you register as a free member, you can create a portfolio which will have very little chance of being seen without some work promoting it. Also, with a free account, you can only upload 5 images. CGS is also very picky about the quality of images you upload. Contrary to GFXArtist where you have to be under a certain size, here...your image has to be over a certain size instead. This ensures that all submissions have nice detail and are of decent quality if not great.

There is also some really great art to look at here by some of the best artists in the business. They are easy to find because they are usually featured lower down on the front page or in the portfolios section of the site. From one artist's portfolios you will be able to find links to other artists in that artist's network. Networking is a feature of CGS where a group of artists can get together and create a network, meaning that they link to each other from their portfolio. You could spend hours and hours here going from one great artists to another.

CGS has a forum like all the other communities. This is well organised with gallery sections and just general chat sections. You'll probably have more chance of being seen on this community if you post in the forum rather than just setting up a portfolio and submitting art.

There is much more to CGS but it's pretty average. The main focus here if probably the articles, it's like an online magazine, referring to it's members many times as 'readers'. It's one of the largest and most respected art sites with many of the best artists showing their stuff. Go check it out, you might find something interesting.
